This Kitchen renovation was almost bigger than it needed to be

2024-10-02T11:02:54-04:00

We took a hard left from the original plan... We were hired to design and build a single story kitchen addition off the back of New England Colonial. Shortly after he got started on the design process, J.P. Hoffman Design Build Owner, CEO and Lead Designer Jason Hoffman pumped the brakes. He quickly realized that an addition was probably unnecessary when there was existing space on the 1st floor not being utilized to it's potential. That sounds like a house pep talk but it's true. In design conversations with our clients, he agreed that yes, the current galley style kitchen was not working for their family of 5 and growing teenagers who like to have friends over and hang out in the kitchen (smart kids). He also recognized that the formal dining room (being used as a playroom and home gym) would make the ideal new home of the

Basement Reinvention in Westwood, MA: Our Next Big Renovation

2024-06-06T10:43:14-04:00

From Storage to Stylish Basement Office, Guest Bedroom, Bathroom & Playroom Adding Basement Square Footage We love when clients call us back for another renovation. A few years ago, we transformed almost every square inch of the main living spaces of this Cape-style home in Westwood, MA. You can see how we transformed the first floor and kitchen here and added a garage with Primary Suite above here. This time, our clients asked us to finish their basement. As their family grew, they converted their second-floor home office into a nursery, leaving our homeowner working at the dining room table. We needed to find a new, more appropriate, and private workspace for a work-from-home client. The existing walkout basement leads to a large patio space, which is under the dining room bump out and deck our team added during the original project. You can also see the existing dining

New Project Alert! Modernizing bathrooms in a 1930's 4-bedroom colonial nestled amidst Boston's best neighborhoods in Newton, MA Our team has been hard at work on two bathroom remodels in Newton, MA. The home, built in the 1930s, features two upstairs bathrooms with a distinct vintage charm. While there's a certain allure to that charm, it's time for a modern upgrade! The existing Primary Bathroom, in particular, is small and leaves much to be desired. And the guest bathroom may not have been updated since the 70's. This post will showcase our starting point (with before photos) and our envisioned outcome (with 3D renderings). Follow along on our Instagram Stories for progress updates. Enlarging the Primary Bathroom & Closet At the beginning of every project, we always ask our clients to share their wants and needs list, as well as their design inspiration, usually via a Houzz Ideabook. Swapping Floor Plans – Kitchen & Dining Room

2023-05-04T09:53:10-04:00

“Wait, show me that again” said our photographer Lara when I showed her the before photo of the entry way of our latest project. She, and many others who see this transformation, are in disbelief about the floor plan modifications we made to this Greater Boston home in Stoughton, MA. The Kitchen Island has replaced the Peloton Bike that used to be in the same space. See how we swapped the kitchen and dining room.  Our Client's Backstory and Floor Plan Dilemma  Built in the mid-1990’s by our client’s family, this colonial was now home to the 3rd generation. The original kitchen was built by our client’s father and had seen years of family meals and holiday entertainment. Our clients called us because the space and flow was no longer working for their family of five. The galley kitchen off the back of

New Project Alert! Elevated Primary Bathroom

2023-04-06T17:15:24-04:00

New Project Alert! Our team recently started production on a Primary Bathroom renovation in Westwood, MA. This post will highlight where we started (with before photos) and where we are going (with 3D renderings). Be sure to follow along on our Instagram Stories for progress updates. Remodel doesn't always mean Reinvention When our client first contacted us, she shared that she wanted to turn her uninspiring bathroom into a retreat space. On the wish list? Replacing the old deck mounted jacuzzi tub with a stand-alone soaker tub. She also shared she would love a larger, tile shower. She enlisted our help to assess and discover if and how the shower could be enlarged. There is a sweet spot with shower sizing. It should be large enough to move around but not too big that the warm air escapes, leaving cold air and an uncomfortable experience (this can happen with

Kitchen & 1st Floor Remodel – Westwood –

2022-01-13T14:15:04-05:00

Part of a larger, whole home renovation in Westwood, this post highlights the final, first floor renovation including: kitchen, dining room and play room remodels. See progress blog posts here and here. A typical Cape style home, this house was built in 1954. Our clients purchased the home and hired us right away to re-imagine the space suitable for a growing family. In an effort to open up the floor plan, we relocated the existing downstairs bathroom, to the newly added mudroom space (more on that in a different post). This opened up the floor plan, connecting the kitchen to the 2 rooms on the 1st floor. One to be used as an office and the other, a play room. We also removed part of the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, allowing natural light to flood in from the dining room, to an otherwise, dark kitchen. We also added

Are you a visual person? Take a virtual tour with us as we documented the major milestones of this kitchen and 1st floor renovation project in West Bridgewater. We took a dark and "small" kitchen as the homeowners thought, and expanded the space to include their dream island and a custom breakfast nook. We even relocated a bathroom/laundry room to gain additional square footage. In the process, we added a closet next to the mudroom. We walk through each phase of the renovation - driven by the 5 design goals our team committed to achieving. We've included some design renderings as well as the before photos and video of these spaces. Plus some progress updates with an overview from our Owner and lead project designer and carpenter, Jason Hoffman. We even take you into our workshop as Jason created the custom breakfast nook benches. The photos, snapped by Tamara Flanagan

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT - Westwood Addition & Whole House Renovation UPDATED POSTS: Kitchen & 1st Floor Garage & Primary Suite Addition  Progress Updates Perhaps one of the most exciting things about moving your family to a new home, is the opportunity to personalize it to your own taste. Before the furniture and kitchen gadgets are moved in ask yourself: "how can this home suit MY family?" "Is it possible to fit an island in the kitchen?" "I'd like to see into my daughter's playroom, while cooking, can we knock down that wall?" "We'd love a Master Suite, but is there space for that?"  Here at J.P. Hoffman Design Build, we're able to answer all those questions, concerns and problems through the Design Phase of our Design Build process. Our newest project is a perfect example of this. Our clients asked some of those same questions. This project is a multi-scope
