This Kitchen renovation was almost bigger than it needed to be

We took a hard left from the original plan... We were hired to design and build a single story kitchen addition off the back of New England Colonial. Shortly after he got started on the design process, J.P. Hoffman Design Build Owner, CEO and Lead Designer Jason Hoffman pumped the brakes. He quickly realized that an addition was probably unnecessary when there was existing space on the 1st floor not being utilized to it's potential. That sounds like a house pep talk but it's true. In design conversations with our clients, he agreed that yes, the current galley style kitchen was not working for their family of 5 and growing teenagers who like to have friends over and hang out in the kitchen (smart kids). “Wait, show me that again” said our photographer Lara when I showed her the before photo of the entry way of our latest project. She, and many others who see this transformation, are in disbelief about the floor plan modifications we made to this Greater Boston home in Stoughton, MA. In an effort to open up the floor plan, we relocated the existing downstairs bathroom, to the newly added mudroom space (more on that in a different post). This opened up the floor plan, connecting the kitchen to the 2 rooms on the 1st floor. One to be used as an office and the other, a play room. We also removed part of the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, allowing natural light to flood in from the dining room, to an otherwise, dark kitchen. We also added
