Design decisions can feel overwhelming when you’re not sure where to start.

For this kitchen renovation, the homeowners wanted better flow, updated finishes, and a more functional layout, but they also wanted to preserve the rustic character they loved.

By removing a wall, updating the flooring, cabinetry, and backsplash, and guiding each design decision along the way, the finished kitchen now feels open, beautiful, and true to the home.

Think your basement ceilings are too low to ever feel like real living space?

You may have more options than you think.

Low ceiling height is common in older homes, and in this 1880s house, the existing basement was especially shallow. At first glance, it could have felt like something the homeowners were simply stuck with.

Instead, our team looked at what was possible. Rather than lifting the house, we dug down, removed the old slab, and poured a new concrete slab with a vapor barrier below it.

That slab was tied into an integrated stepped footing with rebar, creating one solid structure that allowed us to gain height while protecting the integrity of the home.

It’s complex work, but it’s also what made this basement possible.

If your basement has low clearance, it doesn’t mean the space is off limits.

Back to school week always feels like a little reset around here. New routines, busy schedules, and another reminder of just how quickly time goes by.

It also happens to be our work anniversary! This year marks 8 years since I joined Jason at J.P. Hoffman Design Build. ❤️

A lot has changed in those eight years. Our team has grown, our kids have grown, and the business has grown right alongside us. And while we spend our days helping other people figure out how to make their homes work better, we have plenty of those same conversations at our own kitchen table.

Do we renovate or move? Is now the right time? What makes the most sense for our family? Will we still love this decision five years from now?

Turns out, knowing a lot about remodeling doesn’t make those decisions any easier when it’s your own home. 😂
I think that’s one of the things that keeps this work personal for us. We understand that a renovation is about so much more than finishes and floor plans. It’s about how you live, what your family needs, and making a decision you feel good about for years to come.

So, as we celebrate eight years, it felt fitting to share a new photo of the people behind the projects.

For this South Shore kitchen renovation, the goal

For this South Shore kitchen renovation, the goal was to make the pantry feel intentional, and connected to the rest of the space.

We carried the same white oak used on the island and range hood valance into the pantry framing and shelving.

Inside, the pantry adds everyday function with accessible snack storage for the kids, outlets for a coffee station, and under-shelf lighting that brings in the feel of custom under-cabinet lighting.

Now, whether the doors are open or closed, the pantry feels like a natural extension of the kitchen.

Smaller living spaces don’t have to feel small. It’s all about designing for the way you live.

For this Cohasset condo, we created an open, light-filled kitchen with custom cabinetry for added storage and function. Hardwood floors, an ocean-blue island, and gold fixtures bring warmth and balance.

Just off the kitchen, the powder room extends that same thoughtful approach. Textured wallpaper and picture-frame moulding add warmth and architectural interest to a compact space.

Project Highlight: Newton Bathroom Renovations

These two upstairs bathrooms in a 1930s Colonial had vintage charm but lacked function, storage, and everyday comfort.

In the primary bathroom, we bumped out the wall to create room for a walk-in shower and double vanity. A pocket door, recessed medicine cabinets, and expanded storage made the best use of this limited space. The result is a calm, elevated primary bath that feels much more open and usable.

In the guest bathroom, we kept the footprint largely the same but looked for ways to make the space work harder. A recessed linen cabinet adds storage without taking up floor space, and the glass panel above the shower wall preserves natural light.

For basement projects, we’re big believers in starting with the right subfloor system. This product has a rigid core with drainage channels underneath and interlocking 2x2 panels that float over the concrete slab.

Once moisture issues are addressed upfront, this creates a stronger, more reliable substrate for the finished flooring, whether that’s LVP, carpet, or even hardwood.

Before, this kitchen and dining area felt dark, sm

Before, this kitchen and dining area felt dark, small, and closed off from the rest of the home.

The homeowners had already renovated other areas, so this space no longer matched the elevated look and feel they had created throughout the house. They wanted the kitchen to feel just as thoughtful, finished, and connected.

We opened up the layout, brought in more natural light, and created better flow between the kitchen, dining area, and backyard. Since the sink already had a great location beneath the window, we kept it in place and focused on making smart changes where they mattered most, including a 12-foot slider that connects directly to the existing deck.

The result is a bright, welcoming L-shaped kitchen with a large island for prepping, gathering, and entertaining. The pantry brings in the same white oak accents used throughout the kitchen, so whether the doors are open or closed, it feels like an intentional part of the room.

In most projects, our clients are still living in the house while the work is underway, so we take that seriously. Our team plans ahead to keep the renovation as contained and unobtrusive as possible, from closing off the work area to help control dust to keeping the space organized and tidy throughout the process.

The new shower brings a clean, elevated feel to the room, while recessed cabinetry helps optimize storage without taking up valuable floor space. Comparing the 3D renderings to the final bathroom shows how thoughtful planning helps every detail come together before construction begins.

Every inch matters, especially in a basement.

Under the stairs was one of the few spaces in this farmhouse basement that wasn’t taken up by another staircase, so we knew it needed to work a little harder.

Instead of leaving it unused, we turned it into a custom whiteboard wall for games, notes, and everyday creativity. Then, to make the most of the storage opportunity, we added built-in drawers below with a clean, push-to-open design and no visible hardware.

The result is playful, practical, and streamlined, exactly what a well-designed family space should be.
